Côte d'Ivoire military commander Fofié Kouakou Martin dies

Colonel-Major Fofié Kouakou Martin, commander of the 2nd Military Region of Daloa, passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2026, following a long illness. The announcement was made by the General Staff of the Ivorian Armed Forces (FACI).

Born in 1968 in Bondoukou, Fofié Kouakou was a significant figure in Côte d'Ivoire's recent military history. He gained prominence as a commander for the Forces Nouvelles in the Korhogo zone during the country's period of armed rebellion starting in 2002. Following the reunification of the country's military components, he integrated into the regular Ivorian Armed Forces. His career included serving as second-in-command of the 2nd Military Region in 2017 and his promotion to colonel-major in December 2021.

His death follows the recent passing of Division General Dem Aly Justin, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, who died on July 31, 2026. The General Staff, led by Army General Lassina Doumbia, expressed condolences to the family and the military community.
