Côte d’Ivoire potato market shows rising demand and import reliance

Côte d’Ivoire is experiencing a significant increase in potato demand, driven by urbanization, the expansion of fast-food services, and changing dietary habits. While tubers like yam and cassava remain staples, the consumption of potatoes is growing, creating a substantial gap between local supply and market needs.

According to a U.S. Department of Agriculture report, the country requires between 60,000 and 80,000 tons of potatoes annually. However, domestic production remains extremely low, at less than 100 tons per year. Consequently, the nation relies heavily on imports, which average approximately 62,000 tons annually.

Financial data shows a sharp rise in import costs. Between January and September 2026, purchases of fresh or chilled potatoes reached $12.5 million, a 45% increase compared to the $8.64 million recorded during the same period in 2025. This nine-month total nearly matches the entire import expenditure for 2025. While African producers have an opportunity to enter this market, they face challenges regarding consistent quality, competitive pricing, and timely delivery.
