Côte-Nord drug market conflict drives rise in gun violence

A rise in firearm-related crimes on the Côte-Nord region is being driven by a conflict between criminal organizations fighting for control of the lucrative drug market, according to Arold Bernatchez, a former major crimes investigator for the Sûreté du Québec.

Data from the Sûreté du Québec confirms an increase in firearm-related incidents since 2021. Bernatchez describes the situation as a territory war that has intensified since 2023, characterized by an escalation in violence as groups compete for dominance.

The conflict is largely attributed to a significant resurgence in cocaine consumption, which has increased profits and made the region highly attractive to criminal groups. Street gangs from major urban centers are reportedly attempting to seize territories previously controlled by outlaw motorcycle gangs. These groups often use a combination of financial incentives to flip local traffickers, followed by threats and intimidation if those attempts fail.
