CTO Hospital in Iglesias introduces cataract surgery

The Ophthalmology Department at the CTO Hospital in Iglesias has expanded its services to include surgical procedures for the treatment of cataracts. This new offering allows local residents, particularly the elderly population in the Sulcis Iglesiente region, to access eye surgery without traveling to external healthcare facilities.

The procedure involves replacing an opaque lens with an artificial intraocular lens to restore visual function. The implementation of this service was achieved through an organizational collaboration between hospital professionals and external specialists to ensure high standards of care.

Alessandra Todde, the President of the Sardinia Region and Health Councilor, stated that expanding local hospital services is a key strategy to bring care closer to citizens, reduce travel requirements, and help decrease waiting lists. Paolo Cannas, General Director of the ASL Sulcis Iglesiente, also noted that introducing these surgeries was a priority for the organization.
