CTR Energy to implement RE100 solar and heat pump project on Gapado Island

CTR Energy is set to begin construction in October on a renewable energy project for public facilities on Gapado Island, Jeju. As part of the Korea Energy Agency’s ‘2026 Gapado RE100 Village (Net-Zero Island) Project,’ the company will install solar power systems and air-source heat pumps in three locations: a senior center, a fishery village office, and a local police station.

The project aims to transition heating from kerosene to electricity. To offset the increased electricity demand caused by the heat pumps, the company will install 52.245kW of solar power equipment. This integrated approach is designed to achieve an electrification rate of over 99.9% for heating and hot water, while reducing annual operating costs by an estimated 56%.

To account for the island's remote location and harsh maritime environment, the equipment will feature epoxy coating and corrosion-resistant materials. The design also includes a distributed system for the fishery office, using multiple smaller heat pumps instead of one large unit to ensure continuous heating if a single device fails. Remote diagnostic systems will also be implemented to facilitate maintenance from the mainland.
