National Science Foundation invests $37.5M in quantum research

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is investing $37.5 million to expand quantum research at the University of Colorado Boulder and 16 partner institutions. This funding supports the next phase of the NSF Quantum Leap Challenge Institute for Quantum Systems through Entangled Science and Engineering (NSF Q-SEnSE).

Building on an initial $25 million award from 2020, the center now involves 39 researchers. The initiative aims to transition quantum technology from laboratory experiments to practical, real-world applications. Key research areas include the development of highly stable lasers, next-generation atomic clocks, and advanced biomedical sensors designed to detect diseases through the analysis of human breath.

Physicist Jun Ye, a JILA fellow leading the center, noted that these sensitive instruments are essential for probing the unknowns of the universe. The research also explores using optical frequency comb technology for environmental monitoring and detecting trace molecules in the air.
