Cuaspud, Colombia launches first solar‑powered public water system

The municipality of Cuaspud in Nariño, Colombia, bordering Ecuador, inaugurated the department’s first public aqueduct driven by solar photovoltaic energy. The project, led by the mayor’s office in partnership with the public‑utility firm Empocarlosama, modernised a water‑treatment plant that had not been upgraded in 16 years.

Solar panels now power the treatment facility, cutting dependence on conventional electricity, lowering operating costs and reducing environmental impact. Residents of neighborhoods such as Cruz Grande and Villa Merced will receive a more reliable and efficient water supply, aligning the town with broader sustainability and renewable‑energy goals.
