United States seizes $3 million in fuel shipments bound for Cuba

U.S. authorities have intercepted 90 shipments of biodiesel valued at approximately $3 million, destined for the Cuban state-run wholesaler ENETEC S.A. The seizures took place at Port Everglades in Florida and the Port of Houston in Texas.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and the Commerce Department announced the action, citing suspected violations of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and Export Administration Regulations. Officials stated the fuel was intended for a sanctioned entity, part of an effort to disrupt the evasion of U.S. sanctions.

The Cuban government has condemned the seizures, with Vice Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío describing the actions as “piracy and looting” and accusing the United States of intimidating sovereign states and private companies through threats of retaliation. He maintained that fuel imports to Cuba are legal under international law.

The interception occurs amid a severe energy crisis in Cuba, characterized by rolling blackouts. While the fuel blockade has intensified, U.S. solar exports to Cuba have reportedly surged by over 1,000% in the first seven months of 2026 as the island seeks alternative energy sources.
