Cuba adopts 176 economic reforms amid US sanctions

Cuba’s Communist Party leadership and the National Assembly approved a package of 176 measures aimed at opening the island’s economy. The reforms give state‑owned enterprise managers greater autonomy, set the stage for possible privatizations, and seek to attract foreign investment, technology, and financing. They are presented as a response to the “aggressive” U.S. embargo and economic pressure, with officials saying the agenda will address urgent social needs, create wealth, and distribute it more equitably.

The measures also call for institutional restructuring and the development of new market‑based schemes while preserving the role of the socialist state. Cuban authorities emphasize that the plan is meant to sustain social rights and improve living standards despite external coercion.
