Cuba and Dominican Republic discuss climate change and biodiversity financing
Environmental officials from Cuba and the Dominican Republic met to exchange strategies regarding climate change and sustainability. The Dominican delegation, led by Vice Minister of Climate Change and Sustainability Ana Emilia Pimentel Rodríguez, discussed the nation's strategic goals through 2030. A central focus of the discussions was the AdaptHabana Project, which aims to design adaptation measures for Havana's coastal zone through participatory processes involving local, provincial, and national stakeholders.
In a separate effort, Cuban authorities from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) met with Martín Cadena, global manager of the Biodiversity Finance Initiative (Biofin) under the United Nations Development Programme. The meeting, held in the context of the COP17 conference, focused on evaluating Biofin's results in Cuba and exploring innovative financing mechanisms to link biodiversity conservation with the country's social and economic priorities. Officials discussed the third phase of the initiative and how recent social transformations in Cuba could facilitate new funding alternatives for nature protection.
