Cuba bans sale and import of alcoholic energy drinks

Cuba's Ministry of Public Health (Minsap) has ordered a nationwide ban on the sale and import of alcoholic energy drinks to prevent intoxication risks associated with combining alcohol with stimulants like caffeine and taurine. The measure includes the cancellation of existing sanitary registrations for these products and prohibits the issuance of new ones.

The ban affects approximately 15 brands, including Shaka, Shaka Mixer, Pardus, Havik, Eko Mix, Ener Drink Evolution, Duclos, Imperator, Rocafer, Royal Blue, Black Fide, Cachaca, 5 SHOT, Chacal, Vod-K, and Tigris Alco. Authorities have instructed inspectors to halt sales, retain existing stocks, and prepare for seizure and destruction, though owners may be permitted to re-export products.

Enforcement is being carried out through multidisciplinary task forces involving health, commerce, and state inspection officials. In provinces such as Mayabeque and Matanzas, inspectors are visiting warehouses, retail stores, and private vendors to confiscate products. The Ministry of Commerce noted that while the withdrawal of existing merchandise causes economic impact for suppliers, monitoring is ongoing to manage the transition.
