Cuba begins clinical trials for new cancer drug Anti PDL 2C12

Scientists from Cuba’s Center for Molecular Immunology (CIM) have initiated a phase 1 clinical trial for a new cancer treatment candidate, the monoclonal antibody Anti PDL 2C12. The trial is being conducted in Villa Clara at the Celestino Hernández Robau Oncology Hospital, making the province the second in the country to host such studies.

The therapeutic candidate is designed to stimulate the immune system against tumor cells, sharing characteristics with the internationally used treatment pembrolizumab. The trial targets patients with advanced metastatic melanoma that cannot be treated with surgery, patients with metastatic lung tumors in second-line treatment, and those with refractory Hodgkin lymphoma.

According to Juan Carlos Crespo Franco, the clinical trial coordinator, more than 25 patients from the provinces of Cienfuegos, Sancti Spíritus, and Villa Clara are already participating. Early reports indicate favorable responses in imaging studies, improved appetite, and better mood among patients, with minimal reported side effects. The development of this drug is intended to provide a new therapeutic option amid challenges in accessing high-priced international medications.
