U.S. Sends First Humanitarian Aid Shipment to Cuba

The United States dispatched the first shipment of a $100 million humanitarian aid package to Cuba on 21 July. The 18‑ton flight from Miami carried food and hygiene kits for approximately 700 Cuban families and was valued at $60 million for the initial delivery. Distribution is being handled by Catholic Relief Services, Caritas Cuba and local parish volunteers to bypass the Cuban government and prevent diversion of supplies. The aid program, announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio in May, aims to provide basic necessities such as rice, beans, tuna, cooking oil, hygiene items, lanterns and tablets, with plans to reach up to 196 000 families in later phases. U.S. officials, including Deputy Secretary Jeremy Lewin, stressed the dual strategy of maintaining sanctions on the Cuban regime while delivering direct assistance to the population. Cuban authorities initially expressed skepticism, labeling the offer a political move, but have allowed the shipment’s entry and participated in its reception. The aid arrives amid heightened U.S. pressure on Havana, including oil blockades and financial sanctions, and is intended to address the island’s energy and food shortages.
