Cuba celebrates 104 years of radio history

Cuba celebrates 104 years of radio history, marking the anniversary of the first broadcast on August 22, 1922. The inaugural transmission was conducted by pioneer Luis Casas Romeroy and his children via station 2LC, followed by the establishment of regular transmissions by PWX in October of that year.

Over the decades, Cuban radio has evolved from a technical novelty into a central cultural and communicative institution. Following the 1959 Revolution, the radial system took on a strategic role in national sovereignty and social projects. Today, the network consists of over one hundred stations providing coverage across the entire archipelago, serving as a primary source for news, education, and entertainment.

To commemorate this history, new literary works such as ‘La Radio Cubana. El derecho de nacer’ by Josefa Bracero Torres have been published. These chronicles explore the lives of influential figures in Cuban broadcasting, including musicians, actors, and journalists who shaped the medium’s legacy.
