Cuba celebrates legacy of social workers known as ‘doctors of the soul’

In Cuba, social workers—often referred to as the ‘doctors of the soul’—are marking a milestone in their professional history. This designation stems from programs initiated in the early 2000s during the ‘Battle of Ideas,’ an initiative promoted by Fidel Castro.

Following the inauguration of the first specialized training schools in September 2000, social workers have been deployed across the country to support vulnerable populations. These professionals work under the Ministry of Labor and Social Security to address social inequalities and provide assistance to those facing economic and social complexities.
