Cuba commemorates Camilo Cienfuegos 67 years after disappearance
On October 28, Cuba observed the 67th anniversary of the disappearance of revolutionary commander Camilo Cienfuegos. Traditional tributes included the launching of flowers into the sea and rivers across the island, a custom held since his plane went missing in 1959.
In Havana, President Miguel Díaz-Canel joined citizens at the Malecón for the commemorative act. The event served as a platform for officials to discuss the current economic situation and the impact of the United States embargo. Leaders also highlighted Cuba's recent diplomatic success at the United Nations regarding a resolution against the blockade.
In Nicaragua, a joint ceremony was held at Lake Xolotlán in Managua. Cuban and Nicaraguan officials, including the Cuban Ambassador Iliana Fonseca, participated in a tribute that included a film screening about Cienfuegos' life. The ceremony emphasized the historical solidarity between the two nations and the shared revolutionary ideals of the commander.
