Cuba commemorates historic tragedies in Guantánamo and Matanzas

On August 4, the city of Guantánamo holds its annual pilgrimage to an obelisk that marks the 1957 explosion at a clandestine bomb workshop. The blast killed five young revolutionaries—Fabio Rosell del Río, Gustavo Fraga Jacomino, Enrique Rodríguez Picaso (who later died from injuries), Jesús Martín and Abelardo Cuza—and the ceremony brings together families, local officials, the Ministry of the Interior and the Revolutionary Armed Forces to honor their sacrifice.

A day later, on August 5, Matanzas commemorates the victims of the 2019 fire at the Supertanker Base. Seventeen firefighters and personnel who perished are remembered in a post‑mortem ceremony at the Enrique Estrada Firefighters Museum, attended by relatives, municipal authorities, the Party and the Ministry of the Interior. Both events underscore Cuba’s tradition of public remembrance for those who died serving the nation.
