Cuba commemorates 67th anniversary of Camilo Cienfuegos' disappearance

Cuba is observing the 67th anniversary of the disappearance of revolutionary commander Camilo Cienfuegos Gorriarán, who died in an aircraft accident on October 28, 1959. Across the island, citizens participate in traditions such as depositing flowers in rivers, lakes, and the sea to honor his memory.

In Yaguajay, the town that declared him a hero, a colloquium was held to examine his life and work through literature, arts, and music. Similar tributes were organized by students, military academies, and government officials in provinces including Camagüey, Granma, and Sancti Spíritus. In Camagüey, local leaders used the occasion to condemn the United States embargo, framing Cienfuegos' legacy as a guide for current national challenges.

International commemorations also took place, including an event organized by the Cuban Embassy in Nicaragua to highlight his role in the overthrow of Fulgencio Batista. The anniversary serves as a moment for the Cuban government and youth organizations to reinforce revolutionary values and historical identity.
