Cuba Condemns New U.S. Sanctions and Labels Them a Humanitarian Threat

On July 23 the United States announced sanctions targeting nine Cuban‑linked organisations and two individuals, a move announced by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez responded on X, accusing Washington of imposing collective punishment on the Cuban people and saying the aim was to create a humanitarian crisis. He stated, “Cuba is not a threat, the threat is the embargo,” and warned that the sanctions undermine Cuba’s internationally recognised health‑cooperation programmes.

Earlier, on July 20 the U.S. State Department released a 100‑page report framing Cuba as a new target of “civilisation security.” The dossier links Havana to Venezuela, Iran and China, alleging that Cuba provides personnel, technical expertise and internal‑security support to these regimes and portrays the island as a central element in a broader challenge to Western civilisation.

Both pieces illustrate escalating diplomatic tension as the United States intensifies pressure on Cuba, framing the small Caribbean nation as a strategic security concern.
