Cuba consults stakeholders on new draft Education Law
The Cuban Ministry of Education is conducting a nationwide consultation process regarding a draft of the new Education Law. This proposed legislation is described as “highly innovative” because it will serve as a general law covering the entire educational system, including both general education and higher education levels.
Consultations have taken place in provinces such as Mayabeque and Matanzas, involving teachers, students, and families. During a session in Matanzas, Minister of Education Naima Trujillo Barreto recognized educators for maintaining the 2026-2027 school year under difficult conditions. She emphasized the importance of in-person instruction, stating, “it is not possible to educate a child in a non-presential way.”
The draft law consists of 10 titles and 243 articles. Key themes include educational innovation, inclusive education, the application of new technologies and artificial intelligence, and strengthening the links between schools, families, and communities. The final text is intended for submission to the National Assembly of People's Power according to the legislative schedule.
