Cuba denounces U.S. sanctions and urges regional unity amid embargo

Cuban foreign ministry official Ileana Núñez warned that U.S. energy restrictions and collective punishment aim to create a humanitarian crisis and could trigger unpredictable regional instability. Speaking at the Caribbean Ministers’ Council meeting in Panama, she reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace and called for solidarity among Caribbean states.

Núñez cited recent U.S. actions, including an executive order imposing tariffs on goods from countries supplying oil to Cuba and the addition of state oil company Cupet to the Treasury’s Specially Designated Nationals list, which have caused fuel shortages on the island.

A separate analysis of Mexican left‑leaning media found that coverage of Cuba from January to April 2026 focused largely on the U.S. embargo, humanitarian aid and regional solidarity, with private outlets providing the most mentions. Topics such as political prisoners, internal governance issues, or human‑rights violations received minimal attention.
