Cuba diplomats leave Dominican Republic following expulsion order

The Dominican Republic has ordered the expulsion of at least nine Cuban diplomats and their families, a move that affects approximately 21 people in total. The Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX) invoked Article 9 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations to declare the officials persona non grata, though the government has not publicly specified the reasons for this decision.

As the seven-day deadline approached, Cuban diplomatic staff were observed removing personal belongings, furniture, and appliances from the embassy in the El Millón sector of Santo Domingo. The process was conducted under the supervision of the Dominican National Police to ensure security.

In response, Cuban Ambassador Ángel Arzuaga Reyes stated that Cuba would maintain its policy of international solidarity and humanism despite the crisis. While the Dominican government has not released the names or specific roles of the affected individuals, some independent media have identified officials including commercial counselor Dimas Lima Orue and minister counselor Luis Baró. The expulsion marks a significant period of tension in the diplomatic relations between Havana and Santo Domingo.
