Cuba evaluates social impact of economic transformations

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel met with various institutional representatives and community leaders to evaluate the social impact of the country’s 176 ongoing economic and social transformations. Díaz-Canel emphasized that economic growth must directly support social programs and be distributed through the lens of social justice to maintain the nation's socialist character.

The economic reforms aim to partially liberalize and decentralize the economy, including updates to the legal framework for wholesale and retail activities and the simplification of commercial licensing. These changes come amid significant economic pressure, including a petroleum blockade and secondary sanctions.

Officials noted that the success of these structural changes depends on organizational optimization and the active participation of both state and non-state economic actors. The government intends to ensure that economic flexibility does not deepen inequality and that the most vulnerable sectors benefit from the transition.
