Cuba expands solar energy capacity amid severe power crisis

Cuba is intensifying its transition to renewable energy to combat a severe electricity crisis characterized by frequent blackouts and critical fuel shortages. To address the deficit, the country has received significant international support through solar technology.

China has donated 5,000 solar photovoltaic systems to Cuba. These units, which include battery storage, are intended for distribution across all 169 municipalities, prioritizing rural areas, healthcare facilities, and essential public services. This follows previous donations of solar equipment. Additionally, the Cuban government has implemented tax and customs exemptions to encourage the adoption of clean energy technologies, such as solar water heaters and wind turbines.

In a separate humanitarian effort, the Argentine people, through the ‘Estamos con Cuba’ campaign, have donated 45 solar-powered generator modules. These systems are specifically designated for families with electricity-dependent children across six provinces to prevent fatalities caused by power interruptions.

Despite the increase in solar capacity, many citizens continue to face daily power outages. The energy crisis has been exacerbated by declining oil imports and external political pressures, forcing some residents to rely on wood for cooking and endure extreme temperatures without refrigeration or ventilation.
