Cuba faces economic and state collapse amid diplomatic deadlock

Cuba faces an accelerating state and economic collapse, exemplified by the structural failure of historic buildings in Havana, such as the Superior Institute of Industrial Design. Despite the enactment of 176 economic reforms in June intended to expand the private sector, the country remains in a precarious position.

Diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis have stalled. Backchannel negotiations between Washington and Havana reportedly collapsed after Havana rejected a U.S. proposal that offered investment and petroleum in exchange for the removal of President Miguel Díaz-Canel and the privatization of the state oil company.

In response to the situation, the Trump administration has implemented new sanctions against regime officials and state companies, even as it allows limited fuel and food to reach the island through private distributors. The geopolitical landscape is further complicated by tariff threats against nations supplying oil to Cuba and warnings of potential military action.
