Cuba reports record economic losses due to US blockade

Cuba has reported record economic damages caused by the United States' economic, commercial, and financial blockade. Between March 2025 and February 2026, estimated losses reached 8.083 billion dollars, a 7% increase over the previous year.

The tourism sector suffered the highest losses, totaling approximately 2.09 billion dollars, while the electro-energetic sector lost over 802 million dollars. These sectors combined account for more than a third of the total damage. The energy crisis has led to significant fuel shortages, impacting electricity generation and causing frequent blackouts.

In response to the energy deficit and the need to mitigate power outages, Cuba has decided to maintain daylight saving time until November 7, 2027. This measure is expected to prevent an increase in blackouts by an estimated 126 MW during peak evening demand through savings in artificial lighting and increased solar photovoltaic generation. To accommodate this, school and work start times will be delayed by 30 minutes between November 1, 2026, and March 14, 2027.
