Cuba faces economic hurdles in trade and tobacco production

Cuba is facing economic challenges across its agricultural and export sectors. According to the U.S.-Cuba Trade and Economic Council, U.S. agricultural and food exports to Cuba rose to $60.1 million in August 2026, a 54.6% increase compared to August 2025. However, the cumulative total for January through August 2026 stands at $314.3 million, which is a 3.4% decrease from the $325.6 million recorded during the same period in 2025.

Simultaneously, the state enterprise Tabacuba has launched the 2026-2027 tobacco planting campaign, covering 20,000 hectares. Approximately 60% of this cultivation will be concentrated in Pinar del Río. Osvaldo Santana, agricultural director of Tabacuba, noted that the campaign is expected to be difficult due to the U.S. oil blockade and ongoing economic and energy crises. Tobacco remains a vital export and the fourth largest contributor to Cuba's GDP. Due to the current energy crisis, the XXVI edition of the Habano Festival will not be held in Cuba.
