Cuba faces economic strain as informal dollar rate hits record 800 pesos
Cuba is facing severe economic pressure as the informal exchange rate for the US dollar reached a record 800 pesos in mid-October. At this rate, the average monthly state salary of 7,354 pesos is worth approximately US$9.19.
Data from the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI) indicates that while nominal salaries saw a 6.12% increase since April, rising inflation and currency devaluation have significantly eroded purchasing power. Annual inflation in the formal market reached 25.19% in August. The disparity in earnings is notable across sectors; for instance, the construction sector reported an average monthly salary of 14,743 pesos, nearly double the national average.
The gap between official rates and the informal market remains wide. While the central bank and state exchange houses use official rates, the informal market dictates much of the island's actual purchasing power. For many Cuban families, remittances from abroad are vital, as a US$100 gift can now purchase roughly 80,000 pesos at the informal rate, which is nearly 11 times the average monthly state wage.
