Cuba faces intensifying power outages amid fuel shortages and plant failures
Cuba is facing a severe energy crisis characterized by increasing power outages due to thermal plant failures and fuel shortages. The National Electric Union (UNE) reported a projected deficit of 2,130 Megawatts, driven by maintenance issues and the breakdown of significant units, including a thermal unit in Mariel. While renewable energy sources like solar parks are contributing approximately 800 Megawatts to the national grid, the shortage of fuel continues to hinder the operation of smaller generation stations.
In Cienfuegos, authorities have officially announced a new schedule for electrical interruptions. This restructuring aims to improve equity in energy distribution across the municipality. To mitigate the impact on essential services, the government has implemented measures such as renewing generators at the Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima Provincial Hospital and the Paquito González Cueto Pediatric Hospital. Additionally, specialized equipment like panels and Ecoflow systems have been provided to children with specific medical requirements to ensure continuous power in their homes.
