Cuba faces major electricity shortages due to generation deficits
Cuba is facing significant electricity shortages due to a deficit in generation capacity. Recent reports indicate that service disruptions have persisted for 24-hour periods, including throughout the early morning hours.
Technical issues are contributing to the crisis, with several thermal power units currently out of service or undergoing maintenance. Specifically, units at CTE Mariel, CTE Guiteras, CTE Felton, and CTE Renté are reported as broken, while units at CTE Santa Cruz, CTE Nuevitas, and CTE Renté are under maintenance. Thermal generation limitations are estimated at 377 MW.
Forecasts for peak demand periods suggest substantial deficits. For upcoming peak hours, availability is expected to be around 1100 MW against a maximum demand of approximately 3100 MW, leading to projected shortages of over 2000 MW. Solar energy production has provided some relief, with photovoltaic parks contributing significant megawatt-hours during midday periods.
