Caribbean nations face power disruptions and maintenance outages

Various Caribbean nations are experiencing electrical service disruptions due to maintenance and generation deficits.

In the Dominican Republic, the Empresa de Transmisión Eléctrica Dominicana (ETED) has scheduled maintenance on the 69 kV Pimentel–Macorís line for Saturday, September 5. This work will cause temporary outages in 15 sectors of the Duarte province, including Guiza, La Mesa, and La Peña, as well as affecting the Nestlé plant and Grupo Ramos (La Sirena San Francisco de Macorís). Separately, Vice President Raquel Peña addressed public concerns regarding rising electricity bills, noting how increased consumption can push users into higher tariff brackets.

Cuba is facing significant power shortages. The Unión Eléctrica has reported a capacity deficit affecting service throughout the day, with a projected deficit of approximately 2,090 MW to 2,220 MW during peak demand hours. Multiple thermal units, including those at CTE Mariel, Santa Cruz, and Cienfuegos, are currently out of service due to breakdowns or maintenance.

Honduras is also implementing scheduled power cuts. The Empresa Nacional de Energía Eléctrica (ENEE) announced interruptions for Saturday, September 5, to perform maintenance on substations and transmission lines. Affected areas include the Central District (Tegucigalpa) and several communities in the northern zone, such as Puerto Cortés, Choloma, and Tela.
