Cuba faces over 2,000 MW electricity deficit after Guiteras plant outage

Cuba’s national electricity system will experience a shortfall of more than 2,000 MW during peak demand on Saturday after the emergency shutdown of the Antonio Guiteras thermal unit. The outage, combined with other units under repair or maintenance, leaves available capacity at about 1,158 MW against a projected peak demand of 3,200 MW, creating a deficit of roughly 2,042 MW.

Solar generation from 54 new photovoltaic parks contributed 3,643 MWh, delivering a maximum of 526 MW during mid‑day hours, but could not offset the shortfall. The power deficit is expected to affect service throughout the night and early morning hours, with the grid already reporting 1,562 MW of affected demand earlier in the day.

The situation highlights ongoing challenges in Cuba’s energy supply, with multiple thermal units either out of service or under maintenance and limited thermal generation capacity of 318 MW.
