Cuba Faces Power Outages and Protests as Government Pushes Economic Reforms

Prolonged electricity blackouts triggered large‑scale night protests in Havana, Santiago de Cuba and several other provinces, with demonstrators decrying shortages and demanding relief.

At the same time, Cuban authorities approved a 176‑point reform package aimed at revitalising the economy under a tightened U.S. blockade. The measures cover tourism development, changes to property ownership, expanded subsidies, social‑protection programs, increased foreign‑investment opportunities and wage reforms. United Nations officials warned the energy shock is deepening a humanitarian crisis, while U.S. sanctions and executive orders continue to pressure the island.
