Cuba faces severe economic crisis and resource shortages

Cuba is facing its most severe economic crisis in decades, characterized by acute shortages of food, medicine, electricity, and fuel. In Santiago de Cuba, the lack of power prevents the proper storage of food, leading to rapid spoilage in high temperatures, while fuel shortages have paralyzed transportation and food delivery systems.

Father Adam Czerwiński, a missionary working in the region, reports that daily life has become a struggle for survival. Supported by Caritas Polska, the San Antonio María Claret parish has implemented a project titled ‘Kitchen for the Needy’ to provide meals to vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and the homeless.

Beyond physical shortages, the crisis has led to widespread psychological exhaustion and increased migration as families seek stability elsewhere. Czerwiński noted that while some have money, obtaining basic goods remains a significant challenge, and he relies on supplies from Poland to provide essential medicines and hygiene products.
