Cuba faces severe power outages amid energy crisis
Cuba is experiencing a severe energy crisis, with the state utility Unión Eléctrica (UNE) forecasting widespread power outages that could affect up to 68% of the island during peak evening hours.
The electricity deficit is driven by significant generation shortfalls. For the upcoming peak period, the projected generation capacity is only 1,090 MW against a maximum demand of 3,300 MW, resulting in an estimated deficit of 2,210 MW. The crisis is compounded by the fact that seven of the country's 16 thermoelectric generation units are currently non-operational due to maintenance or damage. These thermoelectric plants are critical to the national grid, accounting for 40% of total energy generation.
The situation has been exacerbated by a U.S. oil blockade, which has intensified the energy shortage since early 2024. The lack of reliable electricity is impacting essential services, water supply, food preservation, and public transportation across the island.
