Cuba faces severe humanitarian and healthcare crisis

Italian political delegations, including members of the Movimento 5 Stelle and the Democratic Party, have reported a severe humanitarian and sanitary crisis in Cuba following recent missions to the island.

Observers describe a collapse in basic services, noting that hospitals are operating without electricity or running water. Critical shortages of medicine and medical supplies have forced the postponement of surgeries and the interruption of oncological treatments and life-saving procedures like dialysis. Reports indicate that infant mortality has more than doubled in recent years, rising from 5 to 10 per thousand. Additionally, approximately 3.5 million Cubans lack regular access to potable water.

Delegates highlighted a stark contrast between luxury zones with continuous utilities and residential areas suffering from darkness, food scarcity, and waste accumulation. While the Cuban government continues to provide food packages, they are reportedly shrinking in size amid galloping inflation. The Italian delegations attributed the severity of this induced emergency to the economic sanctions imposed by the United States, which they claim prevent access to essential goods and undermine the national healthcare system.
