Cuba faces severe shortages amid international agricultural support efforts

Cuba is facing significant socio-economic challenges characterized by severe shortages of food and medicine, electricity restrictions, and a decline in tourism. Reports from Havana describe pharmacies lacking supplies, elderly citizens attempting to sell essential medication like insulin on the streets, and hotels closing at a rapid pace.

In response to these conditions, international volunteers have engaged in agricultural support. A group of 42 brigadistas from various Caribbean and Latin American nations, including Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina, recently worked at the ‘La Burgambilia’ agroecological farm in Artemisa. The volunteers performed manual labor, such as clearing stones and preparing land for planting malanga, to support local food production amidst the ongoing scarcity and power outages.
