Cuba Faces Widespread Power Outages After Truck Crash and Storm Damage

A truck lost control and struck a 33‑kilovolt power substation in Aguada de Pasajeros, Cienfuegos province, destroying six circuits and damaging the transformer. The collision cut electricity to 9,026 customers and caused a spill of dielectric oil, complicating repairs. Authorities are working to restore service via an alternate route, but full restoration will take time due to the need for new poles, insulators and reconnection of conductors.

Separately, severe local storms in the province of Sancti Spíritus caused extensive damage to the electric network in the municipalities of Trinidad, Taguasco and Sancti Spíritus. Multiple circuits were affected by fallen trees, broken poles and damaged transformers, leaving many areas without power. Linemen have restored some circuits, including those feeding the provincial hospital, but dozens remain offline and 225 customer complaints are pending. Restoration crews continue to work under challenging conditions to repair the infrastructure across the province.
