Cuba femicide count reaches 47 following murder of obstetrician
The Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) recently celebrated its 66th anniversary, highlighting female participation in sectors such as health, education, and science. However, this institutional milestone stands in stark contrast to rising rates of gender-based violence in the country.
In Mayabeque, the murder of 55-year-old obstetrician Yanelkys Alonso Valdés has drawn significant attention. The attack, allegedly committed by her ex-partner in her home, also left her mother, aged over 75, seriously injured and another relative wounded. The suspect remains in custody after self-inflicting injuries.
The Observatorio de Género de Alas Tensas (OGAT) reports that this case brings their 2026 count of femicides to 47. Their independent monitoring also includes 20 attempted femicides and two male deaths linked to gender-based violence. This follows official data from the Observatorio de Cuba sobre Igualdad de Género (OCIG), which recorded 49 gender-based murders in 2025, noting that nearly 90% of such incidents occurred within the home.
