Cuba gender violence statistics face criticism over judicial delays
Official statistics regarding femicides in Cuba may not accurately reflect real-time occurrences due to judicial delays. Arlín Pérez Duharte, a judicial training official from the Supreme People's Court, acknowledged that data released by the Observatory of Cuba on Gender Equality (OCIG) does not represent deaths occurring in 2025, but rather reflects the conclusion of judicial processes.
Because the OCIG counts cases only when they reach a verdict, crimes committed several years prior may be recorded in current annual statistics. This methodology has been criticized by the Observatory of Alas Tensas (OGAT), which notes that concluding judicial processes is not equivalent to recording femicides as they happen.
While the OCIG reported 49 gender-based murders involving women aged 15 or older in 2025, these figures are tied to the timing of court rulings rather than the timing of the crimes themselves.
