Cuba holds annual pioneer elections for student leadership
Students across Cuba, including those in the provinces of Villa Clara and Las Tunas, participated in the annual pioneer elections to select leaders for the José Martí Pioneer Organization (OPJM). The elections involve students from primary, special, and basic secondary education, covering grades four through nine.
The voting process aims to structure collective councils and appoint various roles, such as study heads, activity heads, and communications correspondents, to manage organizational tasks for the 2026-2027 school year. The event is held annually on September 29 to honor the martyr Francisco ‘Paquito’ González Cueto.
In Las Tunas, the process included the first detachment meetings to establish individual and collective commitments and to organize the Explorer Pioneers Movement. The elections are described as a method of teaching democratic principles and self-direction to youth.
