Cuba honors filmmaker Julio García Espinosa on centenary
The Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) and the Cinemateca de Cuba have launched a year-long series of events to commemorate the centenary of filmmaker Julio García Espinosa (1926–2016).
Starting September 5, the tribute includes an exhibition at the Charles Chaplin cinema featuring personal and professional artifacts from the filmmaker's life. The program also features a screening of the restored 1967 film 'Aventuras de Juan Quin Quin' at the Yara cinema, a restoration project supported by the Cinemateca de Lisboa.
García Espinosa was a central figure in Cuban and Latin American cinema, having served as president of ICAIC from 1983 to 1991 and director of the Escuela Internacional de Cine y TV from 2002 to 2006. His 1955 documentary 'El Mégano' is recognized as a precursor to the revolutionary cinema that emerged in Cuba after 1959.
