Cuba honors writer María Elena Llana for Cervantes Prize candidacy
Cuban writers are holding a tribute for María Elena Llana following her candidacy for the Miguel de Cervantes Prize, the most prestigious award in Hispanic literature. The event, organized by the Cuban Book Institute, is hosted at the Dulce María Loynaz Cultural Center in the Vedado neighborhood of Havana.
In a formal proposal sent to the 2026 Cervantes Prize jury, the Cuban Book Institute identified Llana as one of the island’s most significant narrators. The nomination highlights her stylistic dexterity, her unique perspective on the social environment of the capital, and her mastery of irony and humor. Llana, a recipient of Cuba’s National Literature Prize in 1987 and 2023, is recognized as a major figure in the nation’s fantastic literature.
Her extensive body of work includes over fifteen books, such as ‘La reja’ (1965) and the landmark ‘Casas del Vedado’ (1983), which explores the fantastic elements of the former Cuban bourgeoisie. Her contributions also extend to youth narrative and international anthologies, with her work being studied in Cuba, Spain, the United States, and Mexico.
