Cuba: Human rights groups report restrictions on prisoner visits

The Cuban Observatory of Human Rights (OCDH) has filed a complaint with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights regarding the continued restriction of family visits for political prisoner Walnier Luis Aguilar Rivera. His family reports being denied access to the prison in Sancti Spíritus, despite traveling hundreds of kilometers to reach the facility. Authorities have reportedly required visits to be pre-coordinated with State Security without providing specific details.

In a related context, the difficulties faced by families of incarcerated individuals in Cuba are highlighted in the award-winning documentary ‘Si la vida me diera un deseo’. Directed by Paloma Gomide, the film won the Paddington Prize at the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival. The documentary focuses on the community of women in Granizo who navigate the isolation and logistical challenges of visiting imprisoned husbands, including fuel shortages and the necessity of transporting essential goods to the prisons.
