Cuba implements education reforms and economic proposals amid crisis

Cuba is implementing significant structural changes to its higher education and economic systems amid a severe humanitarian and economic crisis. The government has announced a new academic course for 2026-2027 that will utilize “decentralized processes and teaching activities from the territories,” a move critics describe as an improvised response to failing public services and resource shortages.

To address high inflation and rising prices, economist Ramón Labañino Salazar, Vice President of the National Association of Economists and Accountants of Cuba (ANEC), has proposed several measures. These include halting the financing of the deficit through monetary emission to prevent an “invisible tax” on the poor and unifying the exchange rate to reduce economic distortion. These recommendations align with recent economic measures intended to stabilize the socialist economy and ensure the survival of the current political system.
