Cuba integrates into global economy with sovereignty, says Marrero

Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz has stated that Cuba is integrating into the global economy with sovereignty rather than submission. Speaking at the First International Colloquium ‘Fidel: Legacy and Future’ in Havana, Marrero emphasized that the nation's economic engagement remains true to the legacy of Fidel Castro.

Marrero defended a series of 176 economic and social reforms approved in June 2026, describing them as ‘100 percent Cuban measures.’ He rejected suggestions that the country is adopting models used by China or Vietnam, arguing instead that the reforms represent a sovereign adaptation of the socialist model to modern challenges.

The reform package includes expanding the role of private small and medium-sized enterprises, allowing non-state actors to access banking and currency exchange services under Central Bank supervision, and facilitating foreign investment and trade.
