Cuba oil pipeline failure causes spill and energy disruption

A failure in the oil pipeline connecting the Varadero oil fields to the Matanzas Supertanker Base has caused a 23-hour halt in domestic crude pumping. The pipeline is essential for supplying the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant.

Repairs were conducted under “high danger” conditions due to flammable gas emissions. The incident also resulted in an oil spill that is currently being managed to mitigate environmental impact. The disruption affected both oil production continuity and the National Electric System (SEN).

The event highlights the deteriorating state of Cuba's energy infrastructure. The 75-kilometer, 20-inch diameter pipeline was constructed in 2000 by the Canadian company Tytan. Reports indicate the pipes were built under old regulations that are now incompatible with international standards, revealing vulnerabilities in the nation's ability to extract, store, and transport crude.
