Cuba population aging reaches 26.7 percent

Cuba is experiencing a rapid demographic shift, with the proportion of its population aged 60 and older reaching 26.7% by the end of 2025. According to a report by the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI), this represents a one percentage point increase from 2024.

The aging trend is evident nationwide. Villa Clara is the oldest province, with 30.2% of residents aged 60 or older, followed by Havana at 29.1%. In contrast, Guantánamo reports the lowest percentage of older adults at 23.3%. At the municipal level, Plaza de la Revolución in Havana recorded the highest aging rate in the country at 38.2%, while Yateras in Guantánamo recorded the lowest at 17.9%.

This demographic change is accompanied by a declining total population. While the island reached a historic high of over 11 million inhabitants in 2016, the population fell to approximately 9.43 million by the end of 2025. Data indicates the country lost roughly 1.4 million inhabitants between 2020 and 2024, a trend linked to negative natural growth and low birth rates.
