Cuba population projected to age significantly by 2040

Projections from Cuba’s National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI) indicate that the nation’s population will decline to approximately 8.38 million inhabitants within 15 years. Furthermore, the aging population is expected to reach 36 percent by 2040.

Juan Carlos Alfonso Fraga, deputy head of ONEI, emphasized that these demographic projections are strategic for the implementation of current economic measures and development projects. The data was presented during a scientific session marking Statistical Worker's Day.

The session also addressed the modernization of the national statistical system, focusing on automation, artificial intelligence, and digital communication strategies. New methods were introduced to estimate National Occupation Survey results without field data collection to save resources and increase processing speed.
