Cuba poverty rate reaches 66% of population, study finds

A study by the Centro Cristão de Reflexão e Diálogo (CCRD) reveals that approximately 66% of the Cuban population, or roughly 6.45 million people, are living in economic poverty. This marks the first time in 60 years that poverty affects the majority of the island's population.

The economic crisis is characterized by high inflation, scarcity, and frequent power outages. The study notes that many citizens' incomes are insufficient to cover the cost of a minimum food basket or other essential needs. This situation is exacerbated by a de facto oil blockade imposed by the United States government since January, which has intensified the energy and economic crisis.

Sociologist Mayra Espina, the research coordinator, stated that while the exact figure may vary, the data indicates a growing problem. This is an update from a mid-2025 estimate of 45% poverty, reflecting a significant increase in the cost of basic food items.
